National Safety Month - Week 3: Slips, Trips and Falls

Observed annually in June, National Safety Month focuses on reducing leading causes of injury and death at home, at work, on the road and in communities.

Falls represent a serious hazard. Bathrooms, in particular, can be danger zones when it comes to falls. To help stay safe, place nonslip mats inside and outside of tubs; keep night-lights in bathrooms for increased visibility at night; install grab bars near toilets, showers and tubs; and remove tripping hazards.

Of course, a fall can happen anywhere. To help prevent falls:

  • Ensure electrical and phone cords are secured away from high-traffic areas, such as hallways and in front of furniture.
  • Keeps walkways and hallways free of debris, clutter and obstacles.
  • Wear proper footwear for the area or activity.
  • Clean up spills as soon as they occur.
  • Avoid walking distracted.
  • Don't carry large loads that obstruct your view.
  • Keep your home and office well-lit.
  • Consider installing abrasive floor mats or replacing worn flooring.
  • Be mindful of changes in elevation, including stairs, curbs and ramps.
  • If using a ladder, choose the correct one for the job. Keep a minimum of three points of contact (two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand).
