Jazz Influences

American Jews and Jazz

As Jazz spread in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the original music began to take on different influences, including innovations of Jewish composers who worked along New York's Tin Pan Alley.

Artie Shaw, an American clarinetist formed a jazz and dance band of the 1930s and '40s. He became internationally known through his recording of Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine."  The record eventually became one of the era's defining recordings. He also fused jazz with classical music by adding strings to his arrangements, experimented and formed "chamber jazz" groups that used novel sounds. Shaw was an early promoter  of what became known much later as Third Stream music.

Buddy Rich was one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time.  Well known as an explosive, powerful drummer, he often used contrasting techniques going into quieter passages to keep long drum solos from getting monotonous.  In his early career, Rich toured frequently with the Philharmonic and accompanied major big bands.  Rich's technique, including speed, smooth execution and precision, is one of the most coveted in drumming and has become a common standard.Rich's influence extended from jazz to rock music and jazz fusion.
